I can say this....I come from NY.
There are some people...and usually it's some self-believing smart arse American from the mid-west (no offense intended, bear in mind I am pissed off) who has this ridiculously stupid sense of humour. They enjoy making fun of people, not in a way that everyone will get the joke, even the person being made fun, but in a way that will embarass the other person not enough to be humiliating, but enough so that they have put 9 out of 10 toes over the line.
'You know I was only joking, right? You know I love you.'
No...I don't really care that you were joking. There is a line of discretion and maturity and you try to sit on the fence and 'be funny' while someone else is cringing in the corner. And although it is 'all in good fun' - my behaviour and the behaviour of someone else has been affected because of your 'joke'
And I don't 'know' you were only joking. And I don't care if you are. What you said upset me, embarrassed me and made me feel a bit vulnerable. And you made someone else uncomfortable as well.
And you don't 'love' me - you barely know me.
So - perhaps you should get a dictionary and look up the word joke. Also look up asshole, see if you like your photo.
