You may have heard that the hugely popular annual summer concert series held in the grounds of Kenwood House in Hampstead has been cancelled this year. (The picnic concerts at Audley End in Essex, Marble Hill in Twickenham and Battle Abbey in East Sussex will still go ahead and details will be available on www.picnicconcerts.com from early March.)
The Kenwood concerts have been running for 55 years and have given huge pleasure to hundreds of thousands of people, so this is a very sad day for those who enjoy coming to a beautiful setting to enjoy music on a summer's evening. Not only are the concerts a real highlight in the London calendar but they also provide crucial income for Kenwood House and Estate.
The very difficult decision to cancel the concert series has been taken by English Heritage after the number of concerts was reduced from 10 to 8 in 2006 by Camden Council's Licensing Committee. This decision meant that the concerts are no longer financially viable.
The new licence conditions were imposed in response to a very small number of complaints from local people about noise levels, parking, litter and traffic congestion, in spite of the fact that over 60,000 people come to Kenwood to enjoy the concerts every year.
Unless Camden can be persuaded to reverse their decision, concerts may never return to Kenwood. We will be working tirelessly to try and ensure that they do and your support will be invaluable in helping us achieve this.
